Style Descriptions


European homes feature multiple roof lines and gables, imparting the look and feel of a castle. The exterior may be stone, brick, stucco, or a combination of several materials.
Tudor style homes are complex with steep roof lines with various gables of alternating heights, dormers, exposed framing members and large sculpted brick chimneys.

Mediterranean houses are generally stucco or brick, often painted white or in light pastels to contrast the brightly tiled, low-pitched roof.
The Italian style, or Italian villa style, is a cross between the European style and the Spanish style of home design.
Spanish houses are generally stucco or brick, often painted white or in light pastels to contrast the brightly tiled, low-pitched roof. They often feature a side or front wall to form an arcaded entrance or porch.
The Adobe style is similar to the Santa Fe and the Southwestern style of home design. This is a style, not a construction type.
The Southwest style of home design is also synonymous with the Adobe style and Santa Fe style.
The Sunbelt style typically features stucco siding, tile roofs, covered outdoor patios and is most commonly found in warmer climates.

The Colonial style features 2 story homes that are rectangular with large columns. Colonial house plans usually have one gabled roof or a hipped roof. Entrances are often accentuated with columns extending up both stories.
The Southern style features a hip roof, small window panes, and such features as pedimented doorways and transom lighting.

Early American homes are related to the Colonial style of home design.
The Plantation style of home is similar to the Southern style of home design.
The Greek Revival dominated american architecture during the period 1818-1850. It was the first truly national style in the United States, found in all regions of the country. The popularity of the style was due to strong associations with classical tradition and democracy. The Greek Revival was very adapatable, and permeated all levels of building, from high to low.
Georgian homes are rectangular, with a central entry hall and with chimneys on the end or side. Tall two-story entries are common with balconies at the top of the stairs.

Country home plans typically have a front porch, dormers, and a roof line that runs parallel to the road. Country homes also feature a large front porch with an open railing. The Country style also includes French country home plans and farmhouse plans.

Victorian homes are typically two stories with steep varying roof pitches, octagonal turrets and dormers. Victorian homes typically feature gingerbread detailing as a key element.
The Farmhouse style includes traditional farm house house plans, barnhouse plans, and the country style of home design. (Mel's Victorian is called Farmhouse.)

Prairie style homes are simple in their square design, with boxy shapes at varying heights and depths giving the style a unique look.
Craftsman style house plans feature exteriors consisting of wood siding or stone, masonry chimneys, and rock foundations that slope outward as they get closer to the ground. Other elements include shed dormers, exposed beams or rafter ends, overhanging eaves, and corbels in the gables.
The Bungalow style includes 1 to 1½ story homes that often use elements of the Craftsman style. This includes the use of natural materials, exposed rafter ends, overhanging eaves and corbel gables.
The Cape Cod style includes small 1-½ story homes that usually feature two or more small dormers. The exteriors vary from brick, clapboard, to stucco. The garages on Cape cod style homes are usually detached and positioned towards the rear of the home.

Traditional homes are some of the most common styles built throughout the United States. They are commonly a unique mix of many architectural styles, modified to meet the preferences of the typical American family.
The Contemporary style or modern style of home design can include elements from various other styles.
